SUMMARY:Darter Sculpture Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:Join the Upper Etowah River Alliance as the City of Canton and its Cultural Arts Commission cut the ribbon on Currents of Canton\, a new sculpture of the Etowah darter at the western gateway of Heritage Park. \nThe Etowah darter is a small\, endangered fish found nowhere else on Earth except the Etowah River system. The new sculpture\, by artist Huelani Mei\, celebrates it as a Canton landmark. \nAbout the Sculpture\nCurrents of Canton is the Canton Cultural Arts Commission’s first public sculpture\, chosen from a call for artists held last year. \n\nThe darter stands about 8 feet tall\, woven from metal rods in Mei’s distinctive line style.\nIt swims through abstract metal “water” scrolls planted with native aquatic plants from the Etowah River.\nThe hot-dipped galvanized finish is a nod to Canton’s industrial past. The piece is built to withstand the Etowah’s floods.\nThe design also honors the Cherokee\, who lived along the Etowah River.\n\n“By celebrating a species found nowhere else on earth this sculpture becomes a defining placement at Heritage Park reflecting Canton’s history\, environment and community.” \n— Huelani Mei\, artist \nThe sculpture was funded entirely by a private donation. Read the City of Canton’s announcement\, or learn more about the Etowah’s darters. \nSchedule\n\n11:00 AM: Ribbon-cutting ceremony at Heritage Park\nAfter the ceremony: Lunch at B&B Social\n\nLunch at B&B Social\nAfter the ceremony\, anyone who would like to have lunch with the group is welcome to join us at B&B Social in downtown Canton.

SUMMARY:Celebration of Life for Mary Theresa Sorensen
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the Etowah River Park Amphitheatre to celebrate the life of Mary Theresa Sorensen and enjoy the sunset together by the river she loved. \nMary lived with an adventurous spirit and an extraordinary love for the world around her. She was a wife\, a mom\, an Oma\, a sister\, an aunt\, and a friend\, someone who embraced life wholeheartedly\, found beauty in the simplest moments\, and encouraged others to do the same. She believed that joy was something we could choose\, even when life was difficult. \nAs an environmental toxicology principal at Ramboll\, Mary spent her career helping communities clean up\, restore\, and recover from some of the biggest environmental disasters. She was also a proud member of the Upper Etowah River Alliance. Her love for the Earth wasn’t simply an interest; it was part of how she lived and how she believed we should care for one another and the places we call home. \nMary was lost on August 26\, 2026\, during devastating flooding in Nepal while hiking toward Mount Kailash\, doing what she loved most: embracing adventure and experiencing the beauty of our world. Although her life ended far too soon\, the way she lived continues to inspire us. \n“There is joy in every day\, in every moment of life\, and in every person. It is up to us to find it.” \n— Mary Sorensen \nWhat to Bring\nThis is a celebration\, just as Mary would have wanted. Please: \n\nBring your own lawn chair\nWear casual clothes in bright colors\n\nIn Lieu of Flowers\nThe family invites donations to the Mary Sorensen Environmental Love Scholarship Fund\, created in partnership with the Upper Etowah River Alliance. The fund’s goal is a permanent scholarship for students pursuing environmental science\, conservation\, sustainability\, or related fields. It is meant for students who see the beauty in the world around them and who not only want to protect the Earth but genuinely love being a part of it. \nEvery donation\, no matter the size\, brings the family closer to a scholarship that will keep Mary’s spirit alive for generations. \nGive to the Scholarship Fund \nLet her life bring more life\, color\, and joy to the world.
